35mm Multiwall Polycarbonate Sheeting

This remarkable high insulating glazing sheet is made from damage resistant polycarbonate. We recommend the sheets are a maximum of 1200mm width between supports, these will need to be smaller if used in a canopy. It also has added co-extruded long life protection from the effects of UV rays. 35mm Polycarbonate sheet has very high impact resistance. Also fine optical clarity and excellent fire performance. A high performance UV absorption layer means longer life and prevention of yellowing and loss of strength. Polycarbonate offers excellent protection against vandalism and accidental damage. Such as an impact resistance up to 200 times greater than glass. This is maintained over a broad temperature range and long service life.

Glazing bars used with 35mm multi-wall polycarbonate

35mm polycarbonate can be used with rafter supported and self-support glazing systems.

Rafter bars are screwed into supporting wooden rafters along the length of the bars. Self-support glazing bars do not need rafter support and are fixed via the eaves beam and the wall plate. We recommend the use of our aluminium capped rafter bars with 35mm polycarbonate sheets. We supply these in a range of colours and lengths.

Our self-support glazing bars for 35mm polycarbonate are also available in a wide range of colours and lengths, with dedicated main and end bars. These and all the other profiles needed to build a self-supported lean to roof can be found in our self-support system area of the site.

Other parts needed to build a lean to 35mm polycarbonate roof

There are two main types of 35mm polycarbonate roofs. Rafter supported roofs and self supported ones.

Rafter supported roofs need rafter glazing bars and we recommend our aluminium capped bars for 35mm polycarbonate applications. Your roof will start and end with glazing bars and you will have additional joining bars between each sheet. You use the same bars for intermediate and end bars but will simply add a 35mm aluminium F section to create the end bars. These trims will balance up the outside of the first and last bars where there is no glazing. They will also neatly cloak off the ends of your roof. You will also need 35mm sheet end closures to prevent moisture getting into the bottom ends of the sheets. These are pushed on over the anti-dust tape.

35mm self supported lean to roofs have dedicated end bars and main / intermediate bars. Your roof will start on the left and end on the right with end glazing bars. Between each sheet you will have your main bars. You will also need 35mm sheet end closures to prevent the bottom of your sheets from moisture ingress. These are fitted over the anti-dust tape.

There is also dedicated wall plate for the higher end of the roof to fix it to the wall. and an eaves beam for the lower, front end where the gutter will be attached.

Frequently Asked questions

What is 35mm ‘multi wall’ polycarbonate?

Structure of 35mm twin wall polycarbonate The term multi-wall polycarbonate refers to the structure of the sheet itself. The 35mm polycarbonate sheets have seven walls with cavities in between, known as flutes. The multi-wall structure makes the sheets lighter weight and easier to handle than glass. This sheet has high levels of thermal insulation and was designedspecifically for conservatory roofs.

Which are the length and width of a multiwall sheet?

Length and width of 35mm polcarbonate sheets

The length follows the flutes down the sheet and the width goes across them. The maximum sheet width is 2.1m and the maximum length is 7m. We will cut your sheets to the size you need at no extra cost, saving you time and inconvenience on site.

Is there a correct way up for 35mm polycarbonate sheets?

The upper surface of the sheet has a co-extruded UV protective layer which reduces sun’s penetration and prevents discolouration. Care must be taken to install the sheet the right way up. There is a removable protective film on both surfaces of the sheet. If one side has writing on it, this is the top. If both sides have writing, one will be marked 'this side up'.

Do you need to tape 35mm polycarbonate sheets?

You must tape the open ends of the polycarbonate sheets to prevent dust and insects getting into the flutes. All our 35mm sheets come pre-taped for your convenience at no extra cost. If you think you may need to cut them down on site, you will need to buy additional 35mm anti dust tape to retape them.

What colour of 35mm polycarbonate sheet should I choose?

35mm polycarbonate is available in clear, opal and bronze tints. It is also available in the dual tint options of Heatguard Opal and Bronze Opal.

35mm clear polycarbonate has 63% light transmission allowing plenty of light to shine through. Clear polycarbonate will allow a diffused view of the sky but will show dirt on the roof slightly more than other tints.

35mm opal polycarbonate has a translucent white appearance. It has a light transmission of 33% allowing a softer, more diffused light through it. The translucency offers excellent levels of privacy. Perfect if you have a canopy that will be overlooked by neighbours, and you wish to obscure their view. The opacity also helps to make any leaves or debris on the roof less obvious from below.

35mm bronze polycarbonate has a brown / bronze tint. This colour is often teamed up with brown glazing bars and accessories to match brown windows or conservatories. The light transmission of 35mm bronze is 7%.

35mm heatguard polycarbonate is a modern dual tinted sheet with a silver-grey upper surface and an opal lower one. Perfect for conservatories where thermal insulation is important, the heatguard surface reflects the sun’s rays to reduce heat build up by up to 50%. It also has the additional benefit of helping to keep the heat in on colder days. With a light transmission of 4%, the opal inner surface helps to bounce light around internally keeping the room lighter.

35mm Bronze-Opal polycarbonate is another dual-coloured polycarbonate sheet. This has a bronze upper surface and an opal tinted lower one. The bronze surface reflects the sun’s rays and the opal one gives reflective inner light. It is very thermally insulating offering protection from the sun entering your room and heat escaping.

What projects is 35mm polycarbonate sheet suitable for?

35mm polycarbonate was specifically designed for conservatory roofs to give them the highest levels of thermal insulation. 35mm multiwall polycarbonate sheets are lighter weight and easier to handle than glass.

The maximum recommended unsupported span is around 1200mm on a rafter supported roof. On a self-supported roof, you need to be guided by the bar structural abilities so this may be reduced.

These sheets are also a great choice for industrial and commercial roofing and rooflights.

35mm polycarbonate is also popular for covering fish ponds in the winter due to its excellent insulation properties.
