10mm polycarbonate sheets are a great choice for roofing applications. They are very versatile, durable and great value for money. 10mm polycarbonate sheet has a twin wall structure with internal cavities or flutes. This makes it light weight and easier to handle. As a result fitting is easier especially for roofing where working at height. 10mm polycarbonate sheet is suited for a wide variety of projects. It is most commonly used for carport roofs and canopy roofs. These are also the most popular roofing material for pergolas and garden structures.
10mm twinwall polycarbonate roofing sheets are the most popular thickness. They are easily installed with rafter glazing bars. Great for replacing corrugated sheets in older carports. 10mm polycarbonate sheet can also be used for replacement greenhouse glazing as the fluted structure offers extra thermal insulation.
10mm polycarbonate sheets are available in Clear, Opal and Bronze colours.

10mm polycarbonate sheet is light weight and easy to handle and install. It is an excellent glazing material which is very resistant to impact damage. It is co-extruded with a UV inhibiting layer which offers some protection from the sun’s rays. It also protects the sheet against loss of strength and yellowing for a longer life. This gives years of practical and attractive shelter. 10mm polycarbonate sheets are very cost effective and suited to a wide range of projects. Perfect for roofing a pergola this sheet thickness is also ideal for all lean to canopy roofs and carports. 10mm twin wall polycarbonate sheet is not generally chosen for projects like conservatories with high insulation requirements. A thicker form of multiwall polycarbonate would be better in this sort of application. This is due to the additional walls and cavities giving more layers of insulation. It is however good for the levels of insulation required in greenhouses. In fact, 10mm polycarbonate sheet is often used in applications where insulation is not necessary. Examples of this being pergolas, canopy roofs, carport roofs and other open structures. 10mm polycarbonate sheets are twin-wall and the flutes run down the length of the sheet. This wall and cavity structure, as well as the inert strength of the polycarbonate it is made from, makes it very strong. This means that multi-wall polycarbonate sheets resist impact by up to 200x more than glass. This structure stands up well against accidental damage and vandalism. These properties are maintained for a long time, hence its 10-year warranty. 10mm polycarbonate roofing sheets are much lighter weight than glass. This makes them an easier and safer to install alternative to glass. This is particularly helpful when working at height fitting the sheets into a roof. 10mm polycarbonate sheet is easily installed with PVC capped or aluminium capped rafter bars. We recommend 10mm polycarbonate sheet is a maximum of 600mm wide between supports. The sheets should be fitted with a minimum pitch of 5 degrees.

Rafter glazing bars are the best for 10mm polycarbonate sheets as most self support glazing bars aren't suitable for this thickness. Rafter glazing bars are supported by wooden rafters along their length. We have a choice of PVC capped rafter glazing bars which are the most cost-effective solution. We also have low profile screw down bars.
The PVC capped bars are available in a range of lengths in White, Brown and Anthracite grey.
The aluminium capped glazing bars are available in 50mm and 60mm widths and a range of lengths. They come in White, Brown and Anthracite grey as standard. They are also available in mill finish. This is helpful if you want to powder coat them to another RAL colour to suit your project.
You will need your rafter bars as described above with either PVC or aluminium capping. You will use these at the start and end of your and in between your 10mm polycarbonate sheets as a joining bar.
To create the end bars you use the standard rafter bars and add trims to balance up the empty outside of the bar. Thes trims also help to neatly cloak off the ends of the roof. You add a universal edge trim to outside of the end PVC capped glazing bars. You would add a 10mm aluminium F section to the outsides of the aluminium capped bars. You also need a 10mm sheet end closure to help seal the bottom edge of the sheet against moisture ingress.

The top surface of the 10mm polycarbonate sheets have UV protection which is co-extruded when the sheet is formed. The sheet must be installed the correct way up to reflect this. The surface of the sheet with the print on the protective film goes upwards. When there is print on both sides, one of them will identify which side is the top.

Twin wall polycarbonate is a structured sheet. This means it is made up of walls and cavities known as flutes. Because of its structure it is light weight and easy to handle. 10mm Twin wall polycarbonate is hard wearing and generally used in roofing projects like car port roofs and canopy roofs. Polycarbonate is very strong and durable and the two-wall structure creates a layer of insulation. This makes it popular in greenhouse glazing. With built in UV protection, it is very cost effective and will last for many years to come. 10mm polycarbonate sheets are also available as solid sheets.
Solid polycarbonate is exactly as it sounds, a solid sheet. It is very clear, or glass like, in appearance but much stronger than glass. As a solid sheet it is much heavier than twinwall so is not as easy to handle at height in a roof. Solid polycarbonate is generally used in displays or in security glazing. For most roofing projects 10mm twinwall sheets are the most practical and cost-effective choice. Solid sheets are more suitable if total transparency is desired.
10mm twin wall polycarbonate sheets are co-extruded with a layer of UV protection. This offers protection from the UV rays of the sun. The layer prevents discolouration of the sheet and extends its life.
Polycarbonate has a Class 1 fire rating to BS476/7.
The length follows the lines of the flutes down the sheet, and the width is across them. The maximum sheet size for 10mm polycarbonate sheet is 7m length x 2.1m width. We offer a full cut to sizes service on our 10mm twinwall polycarbonate. This saves you the job of cutting them down on site. This is completely free of charge meaning you only pay for what you need.
Polycarbonate sheets are delivered with a peel off protective film covering both sides. The top side of the sheet has co-extruded (built in) UV protection so the sheet must be installed the right way up. Generally, only one side of the sheet will have writing on the protective film. That indicates that it is the top of the sheet. The roof sheet should be fitted with that side facing the sky. If there is writing on both sides look for the one that says, 'this side up'.
Yes, the open ends of the 10mm polycarbonate sheet always need to be taped. This prevents the ingress of dust and insects. Our sheets come cut to size and are taped for your convenience. The top edge is taped with a solid aluminium one and the bottom with perforated anti-dust tape to give breathability. If you will cut the sheets on site you will need a roll of anti-dust tape to retape them.
We will cut the sheets to size for you at no extra cost. This is the easiest and quickest option for you. If you do need to cut sheets down on site this can be done fairly easily. You would use tools such as a fine-toothed circular saw or jigsaw. You will need to secure the sheet to prevent vibration. When using an electronic saw, this should be used on a slow to medium speed. If you get swarf in the channels of the sheet this can be removed with compressed air. If you cut the sheets down on site we strongly recommend resealing the ends with the appropriate tapes.
If the polycarbonate sheets are going outside, for example on a roof, then you will need to add sheet end closures. They are placed across the ends of flutes of the sheet to help keep moisture out. The sheet closures are easily trimmed to size and fitted. They are simply pushed over the tapes with a bead of low modulus neutral silicon (LMN).
10mm clear polycarbonate is the most popular choice. This allows lots of light to shine through and has a light transmission of 79%. Perfect if used on a roof outside of a room where light is already limited. An example of this would be a patio canopy attached to your house. The downside is that you will see any debris that may build up on the roof. As a result so you will need to clean it more regularly.
10mm opal polycarbonate has a translucent white appearance like that of an opal light bulb. The light through it is softer and diffused with a light transmission of 30%. While this percentage is lower it helps to reflect and bounce light around more under it. This makes it appear brighter. Opal polycarbonate is also good at obscuring the view through. This makes it perfect for a canopy that will be overlooked by neighbours. Similarly it will obscure leaves or debris that may fall onto it more than clear.
10mm bronze polycarbonate, as its name suggests has a brown / bronze tint. This colour option particularly suits brown glazing bars. It is often chosen to tie in with the door and window paintwork on your house. It is also popular for wooden framed structures. Light transmission of 10mm bronze polycarbonate is 35%. This tint will give more shade than clear and is good in areas where you want to reduce the glare of the sun.
10mm polycarbonate is the thinnest sheet that you would use for a roofing project. It is very cost effective, light weight and easy to handle. You would use 10mm polycarbonate sheets on open structures like a canopy roof, car port roof. You would also use it for other structures that do not need high levels of insulation. You would not use 10mm polycarbonate for a conservatory. It would not give enough thermal insulation and a thicker sheet would be needed. 10mm polycarbonate sheets need to keep glazing bar centres at around 600mm as this is its maximum unsupported span. If your rafters are wider than this, you would need to increase the thickness of your sheets. Looking to choose between 10mm or 16mm for your roof? More information can be found in our blog 10mm or 16mm polycarbonate - which is the best for my project?
Not at all! 10mm polycarbonate sheet is the best-selling in our range. This is because it is still of the highest quality whilst offering excellent value for money. Use it in the right application and follow the recommended spans. It will then give you years of attractive and practical coverage for your roof.
With the correct maintenance you can expect the sheets to last around 10 to 20 years. All of the polycarbonate sheets from the Glazing shop have a 10-year limited manufacturer’s warranty.
Polycarbonate can be recycled and can be processed many times before there is a significant loss of quality. Recycling reduces the need for virgin materials which are derived from oil, making it a more sustainable option. Our sheet supplier grinds all of their waste for recycling, making them a greener choice.
